WHY I GIVE BACK I have volunteered for multiple charities, such as being a mentor at the YMCA, and traveling to Las Vegas to volunteer at The Shade Tree, which provides a shelter for homeless and abused women and children in crisis. One charity, however, that I hold near and dear to my heart, is the American Diabetes Association. My nephew LJ was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of two and I didn’t know much about it. I’ve known older people that have diabetes, but I did not know how it would affect a little two-year-old. I watched my brother and sister- in-law go through ups and downs with him (now eight years old), but they’ve found what works. Every year, my family and I participate in the Tour de Cure, Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes and raise funds to support programs in our community to help find a cure. I know it takes a village to continue to make strides, but I’m grateful that I’m able to do anything at all. I would love for my nephew to one day say he USED to have diabetes. I’m more than sure everyone knows someone affected by this disease, but if we all do little things to contribute, either fundraising, outreach activities, or even virtual volunteering on our social media or online community, we can continue to raise awareness and find a cure together!
