Why I Give Back
“Purpose is the place where your deep gladness meets the world’s needs.”- Fredrick Buechner
There comes a time in everyone’s life where they journey to find what makes them happy, to find their purpose. Although, I feel like I always knew my purpose, this past year, I would truly say I began my journey.
I have known since a young age that teaching is my passion. However, life has a tendency to distract us from our goals and aspirations. But, in the fall of 2018 being a full-time employee and cheerleader, I decided that it was time to get back to my heart’s desire of teaching.
At the time, I was unable to be a traditional teacher, so I did some research in order to find other ways that feed my passion. I came across a non-profit organization called ROSE, (Rising Over Standards and Excelling). ROSE’s mission is to provide resources, educational and outreach services, throughout underserved communities. In their efforts, ROSE sponsors annual College Tours, Back to School Drives, and Winter/Christmas Giveaways. ROSE’s main focus is their internship program called Regal Women, Royal Men.
This internship program inspires students, ages 11-18, to be community leaders by fostering life skills, such as self-confidence and communication. When I discovered this non-profit, I quickly became involved and currently I am a mentor for the Regal Women, Royal Men Internship program.
Being a volunteer for ROSE has changed my life. I love interacting with our youth; giving advice and learning from them. I have found what makes me happy and what motivates me. I feel honored to be a part of something that is bigger than myself. It is a humbling experience to assist in the growth and development of young men and women as they achieve the goals.
